Before writing an article, you should choose a topic with potential to receive traffic. You have to determine how much competition is out there and which keywords to optimize to get maximum results. There are several resources that you can use to gauge your competition.
Nichebot.com – Type a keyword into nichebot.com and you will find out how high your competition is. It will also give you a competition ratio between traffic and competitors. You can get a good idea whether or not a keyword phrase is too competitive to write an article about.
Google.com – You should target a keyword phrase that has between 1000 to 5000 optimized results on Google. Optimized results mean the results listed under a keyword phrase within Google when you search that keyword phrase in quotes (” “). Another way to judge the competition of a keyword phrase is to take a look at the top listed sites and check their page rank. If the sites on the first page of natural listings have a lower page rank than the Article site you are going to submit to, your article will have a good chance of getting listed on the first page.

There are useful resources out there such as www.cbengine.com where you can find out which products are newly added to ClickBank. Also, Commission Junction and LinkShare send out Affiliate Newsletters with information on new merchants regularly. You can take full advantage of these by writing articles about new products or merchants.
Where else can you find information about new products or services? People talk about new stuff on forums, focus groups, and news websites. You can find current information on trends, new products, and release dates there.
