“Everybody wants to be somebody, but nobody wants to grow.”
“All truly wise thoughts have been thought already thousands of times; but to make them truly ours, we must think them over again honestly, till they take root in our personal experience.”
- Johann W. von Goethe
I don’t have a big hang up on Goethe, but I do have admiration for those who endure through the ages. George Eliot called Goethe “German’s greatest man of letters”. He is even considered as the literary thinkers to ever put pen to parchment. Here, it is the concept of “growth” that he was talking about.
It has been said that growth provides the only measure for the existence of life, yet tumors grow and seek to snuff out the life of their host. However, it’s better to think of this process we call growth as more than a measure. In the course of growing a business, the term “maturity” might be a better fit. Do you ever think of the maturity of your business? Are you maturing as you grow? – Well, I didn’t until I read Goethe’s quotes.
I am learning to empower myself with forward leaning attitudes. It is much better to have failed going forward than to have not tried at all. Growth and maturity come from trying and making a forward leaning effort. Those who fail to try, simply fail. But when we make an effort to better ourselves, to better our outlook, we will better our financial future. That’s the only way it can happen.
Growth is important but it needs the proper direction to achieve its magic. It needs a winning game plan in order to be beneficial in the long term. Writing down goals is the first step in achieving success.
Or as Goethe put it, “A distracted existence leads us to no goal.”
